Doctoral Residencies

LifeWorks NW is offering formal residency experiences for individuals with Ph.D.s or Psy.D.s in Psychology beginning September 1, 2008. These positions are one year, full time paid positions.

2008 Doctoral Residencies in Psychology

Two positions are offered; one in our Child and Family Program, and one in our Adult Outpatient Program (see below for program descriptions). Salary is $31,283 for a one year appointment, and residents also receive the same health, vacation and training benefits accorded to staff.

Supervision is provided by psychologists licensed in the state of Oregon, and includes scheduled one hour weekly individual supervision with their residency supervisor as well as one hour weekly supervision group. The residency experience and supervision fulfills the Oregon licensure requirements for one year of post doctoral supervised experience. A significant part of the supervision is focused on ethics and Oregon law so that the resident will be ready to complete examination requirements of the Oregon Board of Psychologist Examiners by the end of the residency year.

  • Current vita listing education and training experiences,
  • Documentation of completion of, or current enrollment in, a Psychology Internship training program and expected date of completion, and
  • Evidence of completion of the Doctoral degree via listing on Graduate School Transcript or documentation of reasonable expectations that it will be conferred by residency start date, and
  • Three references including the training director of the internship program and at least one from the applicant’s graduate program.

Adult Outpatient Program

The psychology resident in the Adult Outpatient Program is an integral member of the outpatient staff, and as such, carries out the same duties as other staff.

The resident will participate in the following ways:

  • Broad caseload of clients ranging from mild Adjustment Disorders to serious chronic disorders including Bipolar Disorder and even occasionally Schizophrenia, though brief treatment techniques are used whenever possible and appropriate.
  • Completes any formal psychological evaluations that are assigned, usually involving intellectual and personality measures.
  • Participates in staff meetings.
  • Provides emergency coverage as assigned.
  • Attends the considerable trainings made available to staff.
  • Consults with staff and students about the resident’s areas of expertise.

Important characteristics for the resident are strong writing and communication skills, at least some evaluation skills, efficiency and a willingness to engage in new learning.

Child & Family Program

The psychology resident in the Child & Family Program has a major role in the Child Evaluation Clinic, providing comprehensive psychological evaluations for a wide range of children, including younger children with developmental problems and adolescents with legal problems.

The resident will participate in the following ways:

  • Conducts Psychological Evaluations as noted above.
  • Carries an outpatient caseload.
  • Is an active member of the Child & Family team.
  • May be involved in the development and implementation of new treatment programs that provide intensive services for both younger and older children.
  • Has access to numerous training and networking opportunities within and outside the agency.

Important characteristics for the resident are strong report writing skills, evaluation experience, efficiency and clinical breadth.
